Technology should be built to serve the people. Can we change our course?

The trajectory of technology and its relationship with the people has been bothering us.

Tech these days isn’t being built with people’s happiness and lives in mind. There’s a human-touch that’s lacking. It’s cold. The usability is often trash. The looks are uninspiring. And the goal too often is get people hooked.

There’s too much tech for the sake of tech.

One of the issues is that there is just an over-saturation of technology that is built to just exist, get people addicted, or solve made-up problems. It doesn’t create joy or really help people out.

This same inhumanity rears its head in many of our modern buildings, our public spaces, our infrastructure… the list goes on.

We are becoming a highly mechanized and atomized society.

How we interact with technology as people is going to change. Accessibility and people-centered design is going to be made more important. We hope.

How can technologies be used to improve humanity and enhance lives? How can we build technologies that make people happier rather than just content?

At Design In DC, we build and design technology solutions that are designed for the benefit of the people.

Technology is increasingly becoming something that doesn’t benefit the people. But can it, actually?

People-centered design is something that we employ in everything that we do at Design in DC. We are very inspired by our surroundings and by the people we work with. We never build tech for the sake of tech.

We have learned a lot about people-centered design. So we are going to write a newsletter about it. Would you like to read it? It’ll come with a tidy bow to your inbox once every two weeks.

What you’ll get to read about in this newsletter

–Insights on how to make websites and apps designed more for people. You’ll get to read our own perspectives, as well as read many other perspectives.

–Ways that technology can actually help us and be great for communities.

-What inspires us in how we design websites, apps, and mixed reality. We talk about our surroundings and the built-environment. It’s very important to live in a happy world to build happy tech.
